This board is dedicated to Metal Detectorists throughout Europe.
For many this hobby represents far more then the coins and artifacts that we so frequently turn up. Overwhelmingly in the UK, Detectorists, Museums and Archaeological Organizations live side by side in complete harmony, however there are exceptions to the rule. This apparent common unity of purpose has served to enlighten and rewrite the history of this isle. Metal Detecting journals have increasingly become recognized by the academia as credible research literature. There are detectorists amidst our ranks that have in the recent years justly received recognition for their expertise in their specific fields.
Across Europe the story is somewhat different, persecution, intimidation and harassment by totalitarian regimes (Democracy is an alien concept for most) have driven this hobby underground. In many Countries across European continent, embezzlement, racial and religious persecution, fraud, murder, crimes against humanity and countless other crimes against society and individuals is less vigorously pursued by authorities. In those rare cases where it is, often the sanctions imposed fail abysmally to reflect the severity of the crime when compared to sanctions imposed for metal detecting transgressions. One frequently wonders how many national treasures have ended up in private collections of archaeologists, Government official or rich private collectors, obviously they are beyond the scope of the law.
Please use the pages of this forum to highlight the problems in your little part of Europe.
History was made by ordinary people therefore is it unreasonable that it remains in the public domain? Incidentally one would not define that as being synonymous with museum vaults.
Freedom of speech is fundamental human right however treat people in this forum in the manner you expect to be treated.
Racial, cultural references will be deleted, after all there is enough haltered in this world without adding to it… all references will be deleted and offenders blocked from this forum. Be nice to each other…. Share your experiences.
